Boulder artists Heather Schulte, Carolyn Kerchof, and Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano initiated independent projects during the Covid-19 pandemic as attempts to process what was going on both locally and nationally. Their projects Stitching the Situation, Boulder Covid Stories, and Covid Cuts attempt to capture the pandemic's complexity not only as a once-in-a-lifetime public health crisis, but also as a period of social reckoning about communal health, climate change, and what it means to coexist on this planet. At the height of the stay-at-home order, Heather, Carolyn, and Jessica sought to make connections through their work. All three projects are efforts to piece together what is happening one story, one scrap of paper, or one stitch at a time.

Visitors are invited to participate in various interactive elements of each display, in addition to several writing, collage, and cross-stitching workshops that will accompany this exhibit. These workshops are free and open to the entire Boulder community.

BOULDER COVID STORIES

Carolyn Kerchof initiated the Boulder Covid Stories storytelling and print publishing project in the summer of 2020. She spontaneously interviewed dozens of Boulderites about their experiences during different phases of the pandemic at her “office hours” in various parks and public spaces around Boulder. The Boulder Covid Stories book is a collection of personal essays, featuring original artwork by Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano.

“I let my local community and sense of place inform my creative practice. I aim to foster mutual understanding through storytelling in my work, which emphasizes live events, interactive installations, and print media.”

Jessica Moon Bernstein

A collection of daily works of art I created during the Covid-19 pandemic. This series, Found Connections, consists of 365 works of art on 10” x 10” paper. I used primarily found papers, outdated maps, vintage magazines and cut piece from my art archives to create this new body of work. Each piece embodies my reactions to daily readings of the news, stories told on social media, and/or my daily experiences of living life close to home during the pandemic.” 6 months worth of collages are represented on the wall; the remaining collages can be found in a display box in the gallery.
